Keynote Speakers
Paul W. Davenport, PhD
Modeling Sensory Transduction of Respiratory Work of Breathing
50 Years of Breathlessness: 1975 – 2025
Professor Paul Davenport has been a fixture in the ISARP community since the early days of the Society, notably serving as our President in 2011. An unequivocal leading expert in respiratory (neuro)physiology, he has worked on a remarkable range of topics, from fundamental respiratory mechanisms to the human perception of respiratory sensations and the neural substrates of respiratory sensation and control. His groundbreaking work, combining fundamental neurophysiology with clinical research, has significantly advanced our understanding of respiratory dysfunction and rehabilitation strategies. In recognition of his achievements, University of Florida awarded Prof. Davenport a title of Distinguished Professor in 2012.
Ahead of his retirement from a truly illustrious career, we look forward to a trip down the memory lane, as Prof. Davenport gives us an overview of his research, past and present.
Jón Skírnir Ágústsson, PhD
From Physiology to an FDA-Cleared Medical Device: The Role of Respiratory Movements in Sleep Staging and Arousal Detection with Nox AI Scoring
We are thrilled to welcome Jón Skírnir Ágústsson as a keynote speaker at ISARP 2025. The Vice President of AI and Data Research at Nox Medical, he leads the development of artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies for sleep diagnostics. With a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Iceland and a PhD in experimental physics from Basel University, Jón has spent over a decade at the intersection of biomedical engineering, data science, and medical device development.
Since joining Nox Medical, he has co-founded and grown research teams focused on greenfield innovation, securing major research funding — including a €2 million Horizon 2020 grant — and driving advances that have shaped the company’s medical devices. The latest FDA clearance of Nox AI Scoring represents the culmination of many years of this pioneering work. Jón is passionate about transforming physiological insights into regulatory-grade AI solutions that improve patient outcomes and empower healthcare providers.
